The President of Finland Sauli Niinistö has appointed on 7 March Lieutenant General Jarmo Lindberg as the next Commander of the Finnish Defence Forces as of 1 August 2014 for a five-year term, when the General Ari Puheloinen will retire.
On January 16th 2014 the Finnish Minister of Defence, Mr. Carl Haglund approved the proposal for acquiring one hundred used Leopard 2A6 main battle tanks for the Finnish Army.
One of this year’s most inspiring events – the European Military Press Association’s (EMPA) 34th Congress was held in Helsinki, Finland from 8 to 10 October 2013.
Congress delegates were hospitably welcomed by representatives of the Finnish defence industry offering an interesting program of numerous events and activities. The Finnish Defence Forces will host the International Military Sports Council's (CISM) 52nd World Military Ski Championship in March 2014. The patron of the championship will be the president of Finland. The World Military Ski Championship will take place 24 - 29 March 2014. The cross-country, biathlon and ski orienteering events will take place in Kommattivaara, Sodankylä, and the giant slalom will take place in Levi.
The air exercise is part of the Cross Border operations between Finland, Sweden and Norway expanding over the national boundaries. The goal is to enhance Nordic cooperation in the field of defence under NORDEFCO and develop capabilities for combined operations. Aircraft from Great Britain and the United States (US) will be also involved in the exercise.

The Defence Forces' Photographic Centre will publish around 170,000 wartime photographs on the internet. The collection "From the front line to the home front 1939-1945" can be found on the internet at the address SA-kuva.fi. The photographic material is made available to all Finnish people by the Defence Forces.
The Nordic Defence Cooperation's Military Coordination Committee (MCC) will meet in Helsinki 15-16 May 2013.
The members of the coordination committee are high ranking officers that have been appointed by their chiefs of defence. The committee coordinates cooperation between Nordic armed forces at a military level. The MCC will be reviewing the results of its five subordinate cooperation area working groups and it will discuss the planning, development and future of Nordic defence cooperation.
The aim of Nordic cooperation is to strengthen the national defence of its members, to support their common strengths and help members find efficient common solutions.
The meeting will be held on the island fortress of Suomenlinna in Helsinki.
NORDEFCO has a rotating presidency. Finland has the presidency for 2013.

The Swedish Air Force hosts a combined live exercise dubbed Nordic Air Meet 2012 in the airspace of Northern Sweden on 27 August to 7 September. The Finnish Air Force’s contribution to the event will be eight Hornet multi-role fighters. Tanker aircraft of the United States Air Force will also be involved, operating out of the Rovaniemi airfield.
The Navy will participate in the largest ever oil pollution response exercise to be conducted in the Baltic Sea. The Balex Delta exercise, coordinated by the Finnish Environment Institute will be held at sea off the coast of Helsinki from 28-29 August 2012.
Some 500 persons will attend the exercise along with over twenty pollution response vessels from nine different countries.
The Chief of Staff of the Irish Defence Forces, Lieutenant General Seán McCann and his spouse will arrive in Finland today for an official from 27 to 29 August 2012. The Commander of the Finnish Defence Forces, General Ari Puheloinen will host the visit together with his spouse.
On Friday, 29 June, the President of the Republic of Finland appointed Carl Christoffer Haglund, Master of Science (Economics and Business Administration), a Member of the Government and Minister of Defence as of 5 July. Haglund is Party Leader and a Member of the European Parliament.
The first one of the three mine countermeasure vessels ordered by the Finnish Navy, MHC (Mine Hunter Coastal) Katanpää was handed over to the Finnish Navy.
The vessel was accepted by the Commander of the Finnish Navy, Rear Admiral Veli-Jukka Pennala at the Intermarine shipyard in La Spezia, Italy. All the three MHC vessels built in Sarzana, Italy will arrive to their Finnish home base in the Archipelago Sea Naval Command during the year 2012.
The Finnish Defence Forces' Day Parade will take place in Helsinki on Monday 4 June 2012. The pass in review and inspection of troops will be made by the President of the Republic Sauli Niinistö, Finland's war veterans and the Mayor of Helsinki Jussi Pajunen at the Senate Square in front of the Helsinki Cathedral. The Parade Commander will be the Commander of the Southern Command, Brigadier General Pertti Laatikainen.
Major General Juha Kilpiä appointed as Head of Mission and Chief of Staff of UNTSO United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has on the 25th of March 2011 announced the appointment of Major General Juha Kilpiä as Head of Mission and Chief of Staff of the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO).

The Nordic Battle Group (NBG11) formed by Sweden, Finland, Norway, Estonia and Ireland has a total complement of about 2,200 soldiers, of whom 200 are Finnish. The core of the Finnish contingent is a Jaeger company.
Federal Councillor for Defence, Civil Protection and Sports of the Confederation of Switzerland, Mr Ueli Maurer, is to make an official visit to Finland between the 16th and 18th of May 2010. The visit is hosted by the Finnish Minister of Defence Jyri Häkämies. Topics of the meeting include an overview of the Swiss draft report on security policy as well as discussions regarding the Finnish Security and Defence Policy report. I addition, bilateral relations as well as defence material co-operation will be discussed during the visit. On Tuesday 18th of May both ministers are to visit the Pori Brigade.
