After finishing their daily work, the peacekeepers serving Camp Butmir, Sarajevo regularly visit a well-equipped gym and exercise hall in the afternoon and evening hours. Beyond individual opportunities, of course the interested soldiers of the mission can participate in joint workouts as well.

On August 12 a ceremony was held marking the change of command of the EUFOR Multinational Battalion (MNBN) in Sarajevo. Together with a Turkish company, the Hungarian company will carry out the operational tasks of the battalion from this July until February next year.

The Forum organised annually, hosted by different NATO nation and serves as an optimal opportunity to discuss the burning strategic issues. From September 29 to October 6 the international Land Force exercise „Silver Arrow” will be conducted in Adazi Training Area. During the last years of global economic crisis, the European Union has been hit the hardest. As a result, its formerly famous global “soft power” for what it received Nobel peace prize last year, is on the decline. Apart of economic challenges, in the forthcoming future the Europeans are going to face increasing security challenges arising from global shifts of power and new threats in Middle East, North Africa, and many other places. In the meantime, the United States are decreasing its presence on the European continent and increasingly demanding Europeans to take more responsibility in the defence spending of NATO where European share is only about 28% of total, remaining being the US contribution.

The 2013 NATO Training Synchronisation Conference concluded on 24 January after 3 days of extensive discussions and collaboration. Nearly 180 participants from over 36 countries with representatives from the NATO Command structures, the NATO Member States and the Alliance Partner States had gathered for the event in Riga, Latvia.

Heading a delegation, NATO Military Committee Chairman Admiral Giampaolo di Paola recently paid an official visit to Hungary at Hungarian CHOD LTG Tibor Benkő’s invitation. The high-ranking guest was received with military honors on June 25. The Admiral met with the Chairman of the National Assembly Defence and Law Enforcement Committee and Defence Minister Dr. Csaba Hende. At the plenary talks following the courtesy call on the Defence Minister, the two delegations discussed some topical issues concerning the Hungarian Defence Forces with special regard to the HDF troops’ participation in peace support operations. In the afternoon the MC Chairman delivered a lecture entitled ‘Key issues in the Alliance ahead of the Lisbon Summit’ to senior political and military leaders and the representatives of NGOs and military science working groups.
